Retired Police officer and member of Parliament for Wa West, Peter Lanchene Toobu has revealed that a university degree alone does not guarantee your promotion in the police service.

He made these statements in an interview with Kafui Dey on GTV breakfast show on September 20, 2023 while answering a question on the promotion process in the Ghana Police Service.

Mr.Toobu stated that the era and days where degrees only was an assurance for promotion in the service have been washed away. He added that those times and rules have been reviewed critically to suit professionalism.

“if you don’t want to retire with the chief inspector you can also find another way at the time, you find a way to go back to school, do a degree and come back and you are promoted based on your degree qualification, and the law has not been very clear, what are the additional requirements for me to get in addition to the degree to get that promotion” he stated

Additionally, he added the the promotion in the police service is based on one’s performance. However, in as much the degree does not guarantee your promotion, the degree can also take you to the police college which can guarantee your promotion after you are done.

He also he added that one can become commissioner of police with twenty years due to his professional integrity.

“Within twenty years somebody can become a commissioner of police not because his mate are commissioners”

He furthermore explained that, the police is a whole society, the police is a structured organization. There is a pyramid within the police that defines what it is and that tells you that the higher you go the tougher it becomes.
