Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, says land holds a key economic benefit to transform the country if properly optimized.
Opening the National Symposium on the Land Act 2020, Act 1036, in Accra, Dr. Bawumia said bringing innovation to land administration and digitising the Land Registry will ensure that the government and land owners benefit fully from their lands, with improved tenure security.
In July 2020, Parliament passed the Land Act 2020, Act 1036 which was assented by the President into law in December 2020.
The new Act consolidates the existing laws on land and land administration into a single Act.
It seeks to harmonise these laws to ensure sustainable land administration, management and effective land tenure.
The new Act which has repealed 13 legislations also brings innovation into the land administration regime and introduces reforms, including electronic conveyancing to make it possible to transfer, create or register interests in land by electronic means.
Now the document is ready for dissemination to educate the public and interested stakeholders about their rights and interests as enshrined in the new regime for land administration in Ghana.
According to the Lands Commission, the National Symposium is to allow for knowledge sharing to help shape the direction of implementing the Land Act, Act 1036.
The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Mr. Samuel Jinapor, said the new law will address the knotty land issues including litigation. He assured that the law will be implemented to the letter.
Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, was upbeat about the development and confident that this will ensure effective and properly administered land in Ghana.
Dr. Bawumia called on all partners involved to properly implement the new Land Act to ensure that provisions in the Act are followed to make its administration smooth for all.
