The Minister of Health, Kwaku Agyemang-Manu has revealed in an exclusive interview with gbcghanaonline.com that, the dilapidated La General Hospital will be pulled down by 2019 to avert disaster.
According him, exanimations conducted on the structure has shown that, the buildings have developed some serious crucks and it risks collapsing if nothing is done immediately.
The Sector Minister said, The Hospital has developed numerous defects which are beyond rehabilitation, stressing that, “I have seen The La General hospital, we have done building reports that indicated that, the structure will be pulled down because we cannot rehabilitate what is there”.
According to him their Architectural Engineers have advised The Ministry to collapse the whole structure and put up a new one……“and I have reported it to The Cabinet and Cabinet has given the approval, for us to pull it down and rebuild a new La General Hospital, what left is funding and I had several engagement of the Finance Minister”.
Due to financial constraints we are holding back but come November this year, budgetary allocation will be done, he added.
The Minister noted that, plans are far advanced to move both The Patients and The Staff at The facility to The Ledzokuku-Krowor Municipal Hospital, and Ridge Hospital.
“Every night I pray that nothing bad happen to patients and people around”, he prays.
The La General Hospital is a state owned medical facility located off the Aacra-Tema Beach Road in the heart of The City of Accra. Some years ago, it used to be a polyclinic (La Poly) before getting upgraded and acquiring a General Hospital Status. It has Surgical Theatre, Laboratory, Medical Consultants and other para medics working around the clock throughout the week. There are various wards including the maternity and National Health Insurance Cards are accepted.
