Vice President, Mahamudu Bawumia, has challenged the security agencies to increase the quota given to the Cadet Corps in their recruitment and enlisting processes, as the Cadet Corps holds a lot of talents that need to be unearthed.

He proposed an increase in the quota from the current two percent to 10 percent to encourage the youth to join the Cadet Corps. To this end, he has tasked the Cadet Coordinator and the Ministry of Education to present a proposal to Cabinet for consideration.

Dr Bawumia, while wishing Ghanaians a happy 64th Republic Day, indicated that the day could also be used to celebrate the youth in the country. Dr Bawumia made these remarks when he joined the National Cadet Corps Ghana to mark its 70th anniversary in Accra.

The 70th Anniversary of the National Cadet Corps brought together 20 contingents from the various second cycle schools, Technical Institutes, Junior and Basic Schools across the country. After the Adult Drills display and Trooping of the Mass Band, the contingents on parade performed the slow and quick march to the delight of their audience by forming “Cadet @70th Hurray”.

The anniversary, which is focused on Empowering Ghana’s Youth for Peace and Stability towards Development, is a clarion call to the youth about their duty to the country, especially as the nation gears up for the general election.

Vice President Bawumia applauded the youth, especially the National Cadet Corps, for their contributions towards national development. He expressed confidence that the youth will exhibit their constitutional rights diligently in electing who will lead the country for the next four years peacefully.

National Cadet Coordinator General, Nicholas Nii Tettey Amarteifio, in a remark, appealed to the corporate entities to support Cadets in Ghana.

The National Cadet Corps began at Ghana Secondary Technical School (GSTS) in Takoradi, Western Region, in 1954 with the objective of fostering discipline and loyalty among students. It is also to nurture an interest in joining the then-Gold Coast Frontier Force, which later became the Ghana Army and, subsequently, the Ghana Armed Forces.

Some Headmasters of the schools were recognised for their efforts in making the Cadet Corps in their schools excel.
