Dr. Olufunke Cofie, the West African Regional Representative of the International Water Management Infrastructure (IWMI), emphasized the importance of collaboration among the seven participating countries and regional organizations to develop a resilient agricultural system to enhance water infrastructure in the region.
On Wednesday, April 24th, 2024 at the MJ Grand Hotel in Accra, IWMI hosted a significant workshop titled “Consultation on IWMI West and Central Africa Priorities and Road Map (2024-2030).” The agenda outlined the key priorities and a roadmap for the region, setting a course for action from 2024 to 2030.
During Regional stakeholder’s Consultation on IWMI’s strategic priorities on transforming Water systems for a sustainable future In West Africa, Dr. Cofie stressed the need for a gender-inclusive approach to address gender issues and conflicts, utilizing water as a tool for sustainable development and peace-building in conflict areas.
Dr. Cofie highlighted the challenges faced by the seven countries due to climate change affecting water availability and accessibility.
She emphasized the necessity to improve water access and quality food production through the establishment of resilient agricultural systems.
Encouraging stakeholders and citizens to unite and capitalize on existing opportunities, she emphasized the importance of partnerships, collaboration, and collective action at local, national, and regional levels.
Addressing the equitable sharing of water resources, Dr. Cofie emphasized the importance of utilizing water efficiently for maximum benefit.
She also mentioned the involvement of regional organizations such as the ECOWAS Commission and the Water Resources Management Center, along with global partners like the Global Water Partnership, underscoring the collaborative efforts of member states in West Africa.
Dr. Cofie assured that the inputs and priorities identified during the workshop would be taken into account to address specific issues in the region collaboratively with partners, paving the way for future initiatives.
