The Electoral Commission’s exhibition exercise, meant to validate the voter register ahead of the December 7th general election, is facing low turnout at the Mallam electoral area of the Weija-Gbawe Municipal. Despite efforts to ensure that registered voters confirm their details, interest has remained tepid.
Many residents express frustration over the stagnation of development in their community, pointing to broken political promises as a reason for their lack of enthusiasm. “Nothing has improved in our lives, even after voting. It feels meaningless,” one resident shared.
The Electoral Commission staff at the location voiced their worries about the low turnout, which they believe is due to inadequate outreach. Although efforts have been made to increase awareness, reaching a broader audience has been challenging. “The initiative needs more extensive publicity. Currently, it’s primarily older men and women verifying their information, with the younger generation noticeably missing,” one staff member commented.
Although there is a slow start, the officials remain optimistic that turnout may improve before the exhibition ends. They also advised qualified voters to come and check their details in the upcoming week to ensure fair election in December.
