President Akufo-Addo and Chairman of ECOWAS has charged fellow Heads of State to provide informed decisions that will reverse the deteriorating political turmoil in the sub-region amid recent coup d’etats.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of an Extraordinary Summit of ECOWAS on the Political situation in Burkina Faso, the President called for an urgent need to address insecurity in the sub-region.
He commended the AU for suspending Burkina Faso and called for international collaboration in halting the political turbulence in Africa.
The ECOWAS Chairperson applauded the President of Guinea Bisau for foiling an attempted coup in his country.
The ECOWAS Emergency meeting is to deliberate on the report of a high-powered delegation led by Ghana’s Foreign Minister, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey to Burkina Faso.
The Summit will also assess the meeting between the ECOWAS Military Chiefs and Coup Leader Lieutenant-Colonel Paul-Henri SandaogoDamibi, and to consider imposing sanctions.
President Akufo-Addo thanked fellow Heads of State for their presence at the Summit which will focus on the emerging threats in the sub-region. The move he noted is an indication of their desire to find a lasting solution to the resurgence of coup d’etat in the region.
He said the canker of coups must be addressed before it spreads to the whole region.
President Akufo-Addo said, ”the resurgence of the coup is a matter of grave concern as it challenges the democratic credentials of the region”.
He asked the ECOWAS Heads to stand firm to protect democracy and freedom.
The ECOWAS Chairman condemned the attempted Coup in Guinea Bissau, saying Africa needs to work at eliminating what is pushing for Coups in the region.
A Communique is expected to be released at the end of the Summit.
