The Secretary-General of the West Africa Power Pool (WAPP), Mr Siengui Apollinaire, says the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) intends to spend about $36 billion on energy-related projects to enhance power supply in the sub-region.
He stated that the 2019-2033 Master Plan adopted by the Conference of Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS countries provides for the implementation of 75 priority energy generation and transmission projects across the region.
This, he noted, will require support from investors in the energy market.
Mr. Apollinaire stated this when the Agbogbomefia of Asogli, Togbe Afede, and his investment partners – Shenzhen Energy Group, owners of Sunon Asogli Power Ghana visited the WAPP Secretariat in Cotonou, Benin.
He explained that the implementation of the ambitious Plan will among other things make it possible to finalise the interconnection projects of 14 ECOWAS countries and to launch the competitive phase of the ECOWAS Regional Electricity Market.
Mr. Apollinaire commended Sunon Asogli Power Ghana for its invaluable contributions to the West Africa Power Pool initiative and urged the company to continue to discharge its membership obligations to the Community. The visit was to explore opportunities for cooperation in the development of viable WAPP Priority Generation Projects.
Togbe Afede assured the WAPP Secretariat of his partners’ readiness, financially and technologically, to invest as independent power producer in several ECOWAS countries.
The team was taken around to see the progress of work at the Information and Coordination Centre of the West Africa Power Pool, which is expected to become operational by the end of the year.
Sunon Asogli delegation led by Togbe Afede includes Mr. Wang Zhengjun, the Deputy General Manager, Mr. Elikplim Kwabla Apetorgbor, and Li Kanglin, Business Development Managers of the West Africa Development Unit.
