The Ghana National Egg Campaign Secretariat (GNECS) has demystified the consumption of egg, saying it is a healthy source of protein for persons of all ages.
The group says the consumption rate for eggs in Ghana is currently low, though the situation has appreciated slightly in recent times following some public sensitization and set aside October 8, as national eggs day.
Speaking with GBC News in Tamale, after a a capacity training program on how to prepare various dishes with eggs, the Coordinator of the Ghana National Egg Campaign Secretariat, Madam Comfort Acheampong Kyerewaaa, disclosed that, the consumption of eggs does not only help babies to grow, but it is a healthy source of protein for adults.
“Research shows that, on average, Ghanaians consume between 12 and 20 eggs per person annually, and this is not good enough”, she emphasized.
She therefore encouraged Ghanaians to increase their egg consumption to derive the maximum benefits.
The Ghana National Eggs Campaign Secretariat (GNECS) started in 2015 with the United States Agency for International Development (UNSAID) project known as Assisting Management in Poultry Industry through Feed Strategies (AMPLIFIES) with the focus on per capita consumption of eggs in the country.
As part of the sensitization drive, the group made donations at the Tamale Children’s Home and donated some egg products to the inmates. They also sensitized members of the Tamale disability center and donated crates of eggs and food prepared from eggs.
