Eight deaths recorded following spillage of Bagre dam & torrential rains in U/East Region

A total of eleven thousand, three hundred and twenty six, (11,326), farmers comprising seven thousand, two hundred and forty one, (7,241), males and four thousand, and eighty five, (4,085), female farmers have been affected by the spillage of the Bagre dam and the torrential rains in the Upper East Region.

The floods destroyed over eleven thousand, five hundred and fifty three, (11, 553), hectares of farmlands. Six thousand, six hundred and sixteen, (6,616), houses in the various communities in twelve districts out of the fifteen districts in the region have been either completely or partially destroyed.

Eight persons have been reported dead while two others are missing following the spillage of the Bagre dam coupled with the torrential rains in the region.

Talensi district recorded the highest deaths of three, Builsa North district recorded two deaths, Nabdam and Bolgatanga East Districts recorded one death each and Bolgatanga Municipal also recorded one death.

However, two persons whose bodies could not be found after they were drowned by the floods in the Builsa north and South Districts have been declared missing.

Over nine hundred and nineteen persons have since been living in classrooms. It is against this background that the Upper East Regional Directorate of National Disaster Management Organization, NADMO, have received relief items from central government for onward distribution to the flood victims in the region.

Receiving the relief items on behalf of the flood victims, the Acting Upper East Regional Minister, Frank Fuseini Adongo, expressed his happiness about the quick response by the central government and its development partners.

The relief items include rice, cooking oil, blankets, mosquito nets, mosquito coil, mattresses, mats, used clothings among others.

The Upper East Regional Director of NADMO, Jerry Asamani, hinted that Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will soon visit the region to access the damage caused by the Spillage of the Bagre dam and the torrential rains.

Mr. Asamani commended NADMO Director General and the central government for the swift intervention. He said his outfit is expecting another batch of relief items.

The Regional NADMO Director has admonished health professionals in the region to help the flood victims who are living in classrooms access healthcare delivery in their catchment areas.
