To help track activities and performance of the power sector the Africa Centre for Energy Policy, ACEP has introduced an Electricity Monitoring Platform website and application.

The move is to provide citizens with a tool to have access to information on the power sector, lodge complaints and provide general feedback on the power situation within their community.

This is to resolve some of the challenges bedeviling the sector.

Government targets to achieve 100 percent Universal electricity penetration and affordability in 2020 but the target was extended to 2025. Currently, about 85 percent of the population have access to power.

To achieve the said goal Government needs to do more. Rural access to power remains low with 71.7 percent penetration while urban communities have 100 percent access.

According to USAID about 1.2 million households in Ghana are without power. The Electricity Monitor Platform application shows the list of power generation plants in the country with google locations and in the status of these plants.

Speaking to GBC News, the Policy Lead on Climate Change and Energy Transitioning at ACEP Mr. Charles Ofori said the Electricity Monitoring Platform will serve as a one stop shop to provide information on power related issues.

“ Some of the feedback we receive relates to power fluctuations and sometimes too, meter issues where people have applied for metres and for so long a time they have not received it. Some other issue is one Transmitter not working”. Mr. Ofori added.
