Information coming from the Ellembelle District has it that two excavators were seized on Tuesday, August 30, by a combined team of members of the Ellembelle District Mining Committee and District Security Council meters away from the Nkroful Agriculture Senior High School for engaging in illegal mining.

The two machines, however went missing two days after.

This degenerated into accusations and counter-accusations between the DCE for Ellembelle in the Western Region, Mr. Kwasi Bonzo, and the Ellembele Divisional Police Command.

He has since been arrested.

His arrest happened meters away from the Axim junction after he had attempted to verify whether an excavator being transported was among the two that went missing after the Ellembelle District Mining Committee seized them at an illegal mining site.

According to a source, the DCE was on his way to Sekondi for a radio programme when he received a tip-off that a brand new excavator has been spotted being escorted on the Ellembelle road.

He and the team traveling tracked the machine to a spot after the Ankobra Beach Resort but could not stop it. They persisted. The vehicle transporting the machine slowed down while going over some rumble strips a few meters to the Axim junction.

It was there that the DCE is reported to have identified the excavator as among those missing. As a result, he and his team managed to stop the vehicle.

While he was inquiring from the driver where he was taking the excavator to, some plain-clothed officers in a white pick-up and Nissan patrol car came out and a confrontation ensued.

In the course of the exchanges, the DCE was said to have been physically assaulted, handcuffed, and pushed into the waiting white pick-up.

The arrested DCE was sent to the Western Region Police Command.
