The Energy Commission has cautioned the public against engaging uncertified electrical professionals for domestic and industrial wiring.
The Commission says it will soon enforce the law and prosecute persons who engage uncertified electricians for cable installation.
A Senior Officer of the Energy Commission, John Nilimor Bukari gave the caution at a graduation ceremony for one hundred and ninety nine certified electricians in Tamale.
The Ghana Electrical Wiring Regulations 2011, (L.I. 2008) was passed into law by Parliament in 2012 in response to the spate of electrical fires that hit the country. The law seeks to ensure that, only qualified and certified professionals engage in electrical wiring and installation works in the Ghana.
The Energy Commissioned is mandated under the law to issue guidelines for the certification of electricians within six months after commencement of these regulations.
According to the Commission, more than thirteen thousand certified professionals have so far been passed out since the passage of the law. The graduation of one hundred and ninety nine certified electricians in Tamale, is part of the initiative to increase the number of professionals in Northern Ghana.

The Mayor of Tamale, Sule Salifu, who represented the Northern Regional Minister, emphasized the importance of the certification process in minimising fire outbreaks in the Northern region particularly in Tamale.
He urged the graduands to take advantage of government’s programmes to create jobs for themselves.
“I urge you to take advantage of the ‘YOUSTART’ programme under the Ministry of Finance aimed at making resources available for the youth to start their own businesses with the aim of reducing youth unemployment in the country.”
