Ghana, through the Environmental Protection Agency, has organised an exhibition programme to emphasise the need for collective effort to protect the environment and “journey to a greener future” as the local theme for the 2024 World Environmental Day, alongside the global theme which focuses on “Land Restoration, Desertification and Drought Resilience”.

Speaking at the short ceremony at the EPA National Headquarters to commemorate the day, the Executive Director of EPA, Dr. John Kingsley Krugu, noted that the theme has addressed some of the most pressing challenges of nowadays and that “land degradation, driven by unsustainable practices and exacerbated by climate change, poses a significant threat to ecosystems and human livelihoods”.

According to him, desertification and drought are not only environmental issues but also socio-economic crises that impact millions of people worldwide, especially in the most vulnerable regions. He told the public that the health of the environment is inextricably linked to the wellbeing of humanity, and each one has a role to play in this mission.

He used the occasion to call on Governments, nongovernmental organisations, academic institutions, and local communities to work hand in hand to address these challenges. By “sharing knowledge, resources, and best practices, we can develop holistic solutions that are both effective and sustainable. Let us use this celebration to forge new partnerships, exchange innovative ideas, and commit to tangible actions that will restore our lands, combat desertification, and build resilience against drought”.

The EPA Boss, together with Ophelia Mensah Hayford, the Minister for the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, interacted with exhibitors on what they do to protect the environment.

The Minister for the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Ophelia Mensah Hayford, said Ghana’s food security, economic growth, and environmental sustainability depend on addressing land degradation, desertification, and drought resilience.

Our dedication to addressing land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience is exemplified by sound policies and national efforts to address the challenges. Joint and coordinated efforts from all, as well as an integrated approach that includes climate-resilient agriculture, community engagement, sustainable land management techniques, and regulatory reforms, are being pursued.

Achieving success requires efficient execution and collaboration between local communities, NGOs, and government institutions to scale up addressing these environmental issues.

My wish is that we resolve these problems in a long-lasting manner and realise the global and African city.  So once more, I implore everyone to band together as we journey to a greener future. God bless us all and thank you for your kind attention.
