Evacuation of victims of the Keta tidal waves begins today. Municipal Chief Executive for Ketu South in the Volta Region, Maxwell Lugudor said an emergency meeting has already been held with the Volta Regional Security Council over the matter.
He revealed that talks are ongoing with churches and school authorities to release their facilities for temporary use as shelter for victims of the incident. Mr. Lugudor said a bigger land area has been earmarked to contain all affected persons, however, there is “a lot of service work to be done” to make the place ready. He said NADMO has already given assurance it will provide the victims with relief items today.
Keta Sea Defense
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Works and Housing says it is liaising with the Finance Ministry to get funding to kick start the second phase of the Keta Sea Defense project to save residents from the havoc of tidal waves. The move comes amid the ravaging effects of tidal waves along some communities in the Keta and Ketu Municipalities since Sunday submerging communities and rendering some one thousand people homeless. Speaking at a news conference in Accra, Sector Minister Francis Asenso Boakye said eight kilometres of the second phase of the sea defense project will commence as soon as possible.
Mr. Asenso Boakye said the Blekusu Coastal protection works will also be done to prevent sea erosion.
