Fifteen single mothers from Ada Gorm and neighbouring communities in the Greater Accra Region are set to transform their lives through an economic empowerment programme initiated by Meaningful Life International (MLI). The global humanitarian organization, known for its commitment to supporting vulnerable communities, is financing training in dressmaking, baking, soap making, and hairdressing for these women, aiming to equip them with sustainable livelihoods.
At a ceremony held in Ada Gorm, the beneficiaries received essential tools and materials to commence their training. The event brought together community members, leaders, and representatives of MLI, who collectively expressed optimism about the potential impact of the initiative.
The President of Meaningful Life International, Rev. Dr. Godwin Ahlijah, emphasized the significance of empowering women, particularly single mothers, who often bear the sole responsibility for raising their children under challenging circumstances. “Christmas is a time to show love to the vulnerable in society. This initiative is not just about putting smiles on the faces of these single mothers but also equipping them to become economically empowered. It’s about giving them the tools and skills they need to support their families and break the cycle of poverty,” he stated.
Rev. Dr. Ahlijah noted that many single mothers face significant challenges, including providing for their children and ensuring they receive education. He affirmed MLI’s commitment to following up on the progress of the trainees. “These women will not be left to their fate. We will monitor their training and provide additional support where needed. This is a journey towards independence, and we are with them every step of the way,” he added.
Beyond the skills training, MLI engaged the Ada Gorm community in a variety of activities to mark the festive season. The organization shared the word of God, distributed Christmas gifts to widows, and organized recreational games, including tug of war, sack races, ludo, and musical chairs. Participants and winners of the competitions were rewarded with prizes, creating a festive atmosphere filled with joy and camaraderie.
A beneficiary of the programme, Mary Dzidzor, expressed her gratitude to MLI, saying, “This is a life-changing opportunity for me and my children. With the skills I will learn, I can start my own business and take care of my family without relying on others.”
Since its establishment 18 years ago, Meaningful Life International has been at the forefront of initiatives aimed at improving the lives of disadvantaged individuals and communities. The organization’s mission spans various sectors, including disaster relief, food security, healthcare, education, and skills training.
MLI’s holistic approach to community development is anchored in its belief in creating sustainable solutions to poverty and vulnerability. The Ada Gorm skills training initiative exemplifies the organization’s commitment to empowering individuals, particularly women, to achieve self-reliance and contribute meaningfully to their communities.
As the training programme unfolds, it is expected to not only transform the lives of the 15 beneficiaries but also inspire other vulnerable individuals to embrace opportunities for self-development and empowerment. Through initiatives like these, MLI continues to fulfill its mission of bringing hope and meaningful change to those in need.
