A fire engine stationed at the Fire Service office in Nangodi in the Upper East Region could not move to safe a situation at Pelungu in the Nabdam District. On 28th August, 2024, a community member rushed to inform the fire fighters that an office at a fuel station near the Pelungu Primary School was caught on fire and needed their services.
The fire fighters at Nangodi could not help because, the front tire of the fire engine has been damaged for the past eight weeks. They quickly placed a call for assistance from the Regional office in Bolgatanga who came to control the fire though it was late. One person got wounded and is responding to treatment at the Regional Hospital.
According to a source close to the office of the Ghana National Fire Service in the Nabdam District, a single tire costs GH¢3, 000.00 and they would need more than GH¢6, 000.00 to replace both front tires of the vehicle to ensure balance on the road. The source also disclosed that the Nabdam District Assembly when contacted last week complained that no funds are available for the repair of the vehicle.
“The District Assembly claim that they are unaware the vehicle’s tire is damaged. We wrote to them formally and we have not heard anything from them. Our head office in Bolgatanga has also indicated that there is nothing they can do because the cost is far beyond their capability unless Headquarters intervenes,” The source said.
