On Sunday evening, January 12, 2025, a devastating fire broke out at the Techiman Central Market in the Bono East region, resulting in the destruction of several structures.

The Ghana National Fire Service responded promptly, according to a post shared on social media, with firefighters arriving on the scene within a minute of being alerted at 10:00 PM.

“Firefighters, led by ADO I Takyi Gabriel, arrived within a minute (10:00 PM) and worked tirelessly to confine the fire at 11:16 PM to bring it under control at 12:13 AM and fully extinguished it at 4:12 AM on Monday, January 13, 2025, using six (6) fire appliances,” the service stated.

According to the fire service, they faced challenges, including late reporting of the incident, poor access to the site, and interference from bystanders. Despite that, over 65 firefighters were mobilised to the scene to salvage nearby structures numbering over 700 and prevent further spread.

“There were no reported casualties,” the post on Facebook said.

They said investigations are currently underway to determine the cause of the fire and to implement necessary safety protocols to protect the community in the future.

The recent fire at Techiman, following a similar incident at Kantamanto in Accra, has raised serious concerns among citizens and sparked calls for an investigation into the underlying causes.
