”We are almost there,” South Tongu MP, Sammuel Okudzeto Ablakwa writes that, as part of the first Safe Alternative Housing Project, some 300 houses will be ready for commissioning in a few days.
”Some 300 flood victims in the Volta Region put up in congested classrooms can now have their dignity restored as they prepare to move into decent modern accommodation,” he noted.
He expressed gratitude to the donors, including the Chiefs, for providing the much-needed support.
”We are eternally grateful to Construction Ambassadors—a subsidiary of the First Sky Group, our chiefs for donating free land, and members of my Alternative Housing Committee for making this possible.”
Mr. Ablakwa announced that the Second Phase of the Alternative Housing Project will soon take off.
He disclosed that occupants of the new houses will not be required to pay rent.
”We shall start work on our second alternative housing project very shortly. Remember that no one will be asked to pay rent for these houses.”
Meanwhile, the Government says it is taking steps to make available adequate resources for supporting communities grappling with the aftermath of the recent spillage in the Volta region and floods in the northern parts of Ghana.
This is in line with the allocation of ¢220 million to support these affected communities.
The allocation, which is part of government appropriations and captured in the 2024 Budget Statement and Economic Policy as presented by Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta last Wednesday, will go to support efforts to provide relief to flood victims.
Chief of Staff, Akosua Frema Osei-Opare, disclosed this to Journalists in Accra.
She expressed the government’s commitment to addressing the challenges faced by flood victims head-on.
“As announced by the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, during the reading of the 2024 budget, government has budgeted an amount of GH¢220 million to support the relief phase for communities affected by the Akosombo Dam spillage as well as floods upstream in the Oti, Savannah, and Bono-East Regions,” she said.
