The spillage of the Bagre dam in Burkina Faso has left large portions of the Upper East and North East regions cut off from the rest of the country.
According to the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) in the North East region, though it is too early to estimate the extent of damage, a significant number of communities have been affected.
In the Upper East Region, the Northern Star Tomato Factory at Pwalugu is gradually submerging under floods. The floods have also covered portions of the Bolgatanga-Tamale highway, threatening to cut off the only alternative route linking the Upper East to the rest of the country.
Some residents of Naminyela have started evacuating but say they need urgent support and help to move their items.
GBC’s Murtala Issah reports that the humanitarian situation could worsen with more rains. The Talensi Nabdam District Director of NADMO told GBC News that they are monitoring the situation and may close the road to traffic if the situation gets worse.
Already, the Bawku – Bolgatanga highway is cut off forcing commuters traveling to and from Bawku to pass through the Nalerigu-Nakpanduri-Garu road which is in a very bad state.
The Bolgatanga-Tamale highway remains the only viable route to the Upper East and the Sahelian region.
