Former President Jerry John Rawlings has condemned recent police brutalities meted out on demonstrating law students.
In a tweeted message, Flt Lt. Rawlings said:, “The heavy and high-handed manner the Police handled the demonstration by law students was most uncalled for. The conduct of the demonstrators did not warrant the use of hot water cannons and rubber bullets.”
According to Flight Lieutenant Rawlings, the conduct of the police didn’t reflect their professional training.
“Police actions must win the confidence of the people, not the opposite. Monday’s actions rather sow seeds of discontent and encourage negative defiance,” he said.
The students who were on a peaceful demonstration enroute to the Presidency with a petition for the reform of legal education in Ghana, were met with water cannons and rubber bullets by the personnel from the Accra Regional Police Command.
Thirteen students were arrested but later released while many others sustained injuries from the water, tear gas and the rubber bullets.
