The Member of Parliament (MP) for Madina Constituency in the Greater Accra Region, Honourable Francis-Xavier Sosu, has been named the Most Outstanding Member of Parliament Across Africa for Human Rights and Legal Advocacy at the 2024 African Public Service (APSO) awards, organized by Business Executive Magazine.
The award recognizes the MP’s exemplary performance as a public servant and his significant contributions to good corporate governance and the socio-economic development of Africa.
Since becoming an MP, Sosu, who also serves as the Deputy Ranking Member of the Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee, has introduced 17 private members’ bills.
Three of these bills have been passed by Parliament, with one receiving presidential assent.
His initiatives in Parliament have led to the abolition of the death penalty under the Criminal Offences Act, the abolition of the death penalty under the Armed Forces Laws, and the criminalization of witchcraft accusations.
In a brief address after receiving the award, Honourable Sosu expressed his appreciation to the organizers for recognizing his advocacy work in support of society.
“I dedicate this award to all human rights practitioners and those who are fighting for the protection of human rights. We cannot live without fear of intimidation, but when we respect the fundamental human rights of everyone, we want justice for all and injustice to none. I once again dedicate this award to the people of Madina Constituency through the Parliament of the Republic of Ghana,” he stated.
The awards ceremony also honoured the Minister for Transportation, Hon. Kwaku Asiamah, as the most innovative in the transport sector in Africa. Other recipients included La Dadekotopon as the most impactful Municipal Assembly and Ayawaso West Wuogon Assembly for the most accomplished Road Infrastructure.
Several other distinguished achievers from various African countries were also recognized.
