Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has defended Freemasonry, rejecting claims that it conflicts with Christianity, following the Catholic Church’s renewed stance prohibiting its members from joining the fraternity.

Speaking on Channel One TV on Wednesday, January 29, the Effutu MP insisted that Freemasonry is not anti-Christian and should not be misrepresented.

“Freemasonry is not anti-Christ. At the highest level of Masonry, you must profess Christ. People don’t know, and people say things. But I’m ready for that debate,” he said.

His comments come after the Catholic Archdiocese of Accra, in a statement signed by its Metropolitan Archbishop, Most Reverend John Bonaventure Kwofie, reaffirmed that Catholics cannot be Freemasons, warning members against joining the group.

However, Mr. Afenyo-Markin dismissed concerns that his involvement in Freemasonry contradicts his faith, stating that he had not received any direct communication from church leaders.

“I have seen letters flying around, but my Archbishop, Most Rev. Charles Gabriel Palmer-Buckle, has not written to me personally,” he said.

He further emphasised his dedication to the Catholic faith, adding that the church should foster dialogue rather than impose restrictions.

“My church comes first. The church doesn’t force people; it shows compassion, listens, and shows love,” he stated.

Mr. Afenyo-Markin also revealed that several Catholics are Freemasons but choose to remain silent due to fear of backlash.

“I’m a committed Catholic. If I was afraid, I wouldn’t have brought it up. There are many Catholics who are Freemasons and are afraid to talk about it,” he noted.
