The Fair Wages and Salaries Commission has directed the Controller and Accountant General’s Department (CAGD), to restore allowances it erroneously removed for staff of GBC. This is in compliance with the ruling of the National Labour Commission (NLC).
A letter to the Controller and Accountant General’s Department dated June 29, 2023, and signed by the Chief Executive of the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, Benjamin Arthur, has requested the immediate restoration of the allowances in dispute. Following this, GBC and Fair Wages can now dialogue towards a review of the affected allowances.
On 7 June, 2023, Fair Wages petitioned the NLC over the stoppage of allowances to some staff of the Corporation after staff threatened a strike.
The NLC summoned the two parties over the issue after workers at GBC threatened to embark on a series of industrial actions. After both parties were given a hearing at a meeting, the NLC directed the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission to restore the allowances that had unilaterally been withdrawn.
