By Seli Baisie

Organised Labour has called off the planned nationwide strike, which was scheduled for Thursday, October 10, 2024, in protest against illegal mining commonly known as galamsey.

This announcement was made by Trade Union Congress (TUC) Secretary General, Joshua Ansah, during a press briefing in Accra on Wednesday, October 9, 2024.

Speaking at a press conference in Accra, Mr. Joshua Ansah said the concessions offered by the government was “significant” to the demands of Organised Labour.

He noted that Organised Labour “will keenly monitor the implementation measures by the government and government will hear from us if it fails to do the needful.”

This suspension comes just days after Organised Labour had signaled its intent to proceed with the strike, expressing dissatisfaction with the government’s earlier efforts to address the menace.

Key measures that led to the strike being suspended include the revocation of the 2023 Regulation on mining in forest reserves (L.I. 2642).

Additionally, President Akufo-Addo has directed the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources to present a memorandum to Parliament for the formal revocation of the regulation when Parliament reconvenes on Tuesday, October 15, 2024.
