Investigative Journalist and Anti-galamsey activist Erastus Asare-Donkor has confirmed that illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, which is still widespread across the country, has shown no sign of stopping soon, despite government’s efforts to curb the activity, citing that new groups had taken over mining sites, polluting rivers, and destroying forest reserves.

Speaking in an interview with Kafui Dey on GTV breakfast on Thursday February 13, 2025, Mr. Donkor confirmed that illegal miners are actively working in areas such as the Pra River and other riverbanks in the Shama area. He reported that excavators have been spotted in wetlands, causing severe environmental damage. Some of these miners claim to have the support of influential people, even though they lack the necessary licenses.

Mr. Donkor also revealed that reporting on illegal mining has become more dangerous. Armed groups have taken over some forest reserves, making it risky for journalists and forest guards to enter these areas. As a result, journalists now rely on drones and local contacts to capture evidence of the destruction.

He emphasised that unless the government takes a stronger stance against illegal mining, the fight against galamsey will not be won. “The current efforts are not working,” he said, calling for urgent action to tackle the problem.
