The Coalition of Concerned Citizens Against Galamsey is taking a significant step today, October 4, by submitting a formal petition to the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources.

This move is part of their ongoing efforts to combat illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, which has devastating environmental and social impacts.

This comes on the second day of the group’s three-day protest, which began on Thursday, October 3.

Organized under the slogans #FreeTheCitizens and #SayNoToGalamsey, the protest aims to highlight the devastating impact of galamsey on Ghana’s environment and push for stronger government action.

The coalition is urging citizens to demand immediate measures to combat the widespread environmental damage caused by galamsey.

Protest Demands:

• Comprehensive Policy Review: A thorough review of policies to curb illegal mining
• Stronger Law Enforcement: Effective enforcement of laws to protect Ghana’s natural resources
• Citizen Action: Collective responsibility to preserve waterbodies and forest reserves

Convener Brownson Adatsi emphasized the urgent need for citizens to join the movement, stressing that protecting Ghana’s environment is a collective responsibility.

“Galamsey is a deliberate attempt to destroy our resources, water, land, and future by a select few,” Adatsi said. “We must come together, as the problem affects us all.”

The coalition will present its petition to the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, outlining concerns and recommendations for tackling illegal mining.

Despite previous government efforts, the coalition believes more decisive action is needed to address the crisis and safeguard Ghana’s ecological future.
