Director General of GBC, Prof Amin Alhassan says management is exploring the possibility of adopting solar energy as a supplementary power source to run the Corporation.
He was speaking at a Stakeholders Engagement in Accra.
Professor Amin Alhassan said the Corporation will start using solar power on a pilot basis for one or two studios to assess the initiative and determine whether to go full scale.
Prof. Alhassan highlighted some challenges GBC is going through which includes huge electricity tariffs which, he said, has thrown the Corporation’s planned budget out of course.
“We have decided as management and previous board was really on our neck to come out with a plan on solar and we have decided as management that we will start piloting one of our studios to put it in solar and we’ve obverse on how nature sunlight entrees us And if it works well we will continue to escalate the issue of solar. As at April 2024, GBC is spending more than 50% of its revenue on electricity bill payments”.
Management is seriously considering diversifying our power source to include solar. So, we have started exploring the possibility of piloting solar for one or two studios. The pilot will help us understand how needs and scale it up.
He said as of April 2024, GBC had spent more than 50 percent of its revenue on electricity bills.
Prof. Amin also said management is working to retool GBC Online and GBC social media departments to work seamlessly on convergence of programmes from TV and Radio Studios.
He was speaking at the 2024 Stakeholders’ Conference of the Corporation in Accra, dubbed Sustaining GBC as a Public Service Media in the New Media Ecosystem.
