Three Senior Journalists working with the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation, GBC, have been picked to serve on various committees of the Ghana Journalists Association, GJA.
The Senior Journalists are Rebecca Ekpe, Justice Mingle and Dominic Hlodzi.
They bring to the various Committees on which they serve a wide variety of knowledge in the fields of journalism and communication accrued over the years with the aim of maintaining higher journalistic standards in Ghana.
Rebecca Ekpe who serves on the GJA’s Membership Vetting Committee says, “it is an honour because this is a very important and quite sensitive area so far as maintaining Journalistic Standards in the country is concerned.”
She promised to bring to bear “knowledge acquired in the journalism practice in the classroom and on the field, both home and abroad”. Rebecca pointed out that a lot of support is however needed for the entire membership of the GJA to carry the vision of the forebears of the Association. GJA President Affail Monney is Chairman of the Membership Vetting Committee.
Justice Mingle said his vision for the GJA’s Constitutional Review Committee is to offer his best of expertise to ensure that the “Constitution of the Ghana Journalists Association is robust and compliant with modern trends”.
“I hope to fashion out a Constitution devoid of controversy,’’ said Justice Mingle. GJA’s Constitutional Review Committee is being chaired by Samson Lardy Anyenini.
Dominic Hlodzi asserts that “Journalism like any other profession requires that practitioners constantly learn and are exposed to new things and best practices”. The International Relations Committee on which he is serving, he says, will seek capacity building opportunities for journalists and help to promote good relations with regional, continental and global media Associations and institutions.
“We will try our best to pursue the goals of the GJA in setting up the committee,” Dominic reiterates.
The goals include advising the GJA National Executive on its dealings with international organisations which are interested in promoting freedom of expression, media pluralism and accountability, managing international programmes and activities of the Association and explore international opportunities for the professional development of members.
Dominic pointed out: “I have already been doing some of these activities where I support the Association in facilitating training opportunities for journalists across the country.”
He said his brings to the Committee includes, with some level of experience and hopes to ‘’work with the other members to make international Relations an integral part of the GJA and also ensure that our work inures to the benefit of members of the Association’’.
“We will need support from all journalists and media practitioners to be successful in this assignment,’’ said Dominic. GJA’s International Relations Committee is being chaired by Public Affairs Officer, Mary Mensah.
