The Minister of Communications, Mrs. Ursula Owusu Ekuful, has launched the trial phase of Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB), in Ghana.
DAB is a digital sound broadcasting technology, which delivers enhanced sound quality, improved spectrum efficiency channels and interactive features.
The trial phase of the DAB service will be deployed in Accra and Kumasi for a period of six months with eighteen existing FM stations in the two regions, following which the full deployment will be done nationwide.
GBC’s Uniiq FM is the first among 18 stations selected for the trial phase.
Ghana is the first country in West Africa to deploy DAB technology. The Director General of the National Communications Authority, Joe Anokye, said it has become imperative to deploy DAB technology in Ghana because the normal FM stations in the country have for some time suffered interference, which causes poor sound quality.
The Minister of Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, said the DAB provides an opportunity to develop and promote content in the new digital era.
Launching the platform, the Minister of Communications and Digitalization, Mrs. Ursula Owusu Ekuful, said Radio remains crucial to information dissemination. She said DAB will address frequency constraints.
