Sports journalist and commentator from the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC URA Radio) Abagna Jose Nelson claimed the coveted title of Sports Journalist of the Year for the remarkable year in review in the Upper East Region. The all-time sports presenter has won the ultimate prize for the third time since the inception of the awards in 2022.

Nelson’s story focused on unearthing talents from every corner of Ghana including teams from the local communities. The Success Story of Akanyonga Redeem FC, a team that took the 2023 Zida Juvenile Tournament by storm was used as a reference for the Ghana Football Association to invest in local talents. Mr. Abagna described the performance of Akayonga Redeem FC as an enviable achievement in the Zida Juvenile Tournament.

This biggest award for Sports Journalist in the Upper East Region adds up to a stellar career pool of recognition for Jose Nelson who has made sports a flagship programme in GBC URA Radio for more than a decade in the municipality.

“We won Best Sports Journalist of the Year, 2023 during the Ghana Journalists Association Upper East Regional Awards Night. This is the 3rd time in a row that we are winning this category.

Thanks to entire GBC URA Radio Sports Team. This is for us all. These awards can only push us to do more. Alhassan Abubakari, I owe this success to you for giving me such a rare opportunity to work under you at GBC URA Radio some years ago. That singular chance you gave me at URA Radio when others were kicking against it, has brought me this far.” Mr. Abagna wrote this on his facebook wall.

The 2024 3rd GJA awards held at Blue Sky in the Bolgatanga East District was on the theme, 75 years of the GJA: The contribution of the media in shaping Ghana’s democracy through peaceful and fair elections.”
