The Acting Upper West Regional Director of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), Lawrence Tetteh, has described the launch of the heritage month by the GBC as something that is relevant to “cultural nationalism”. He pointed out that there is the need for a deliberate agenda to create awareness for the citizenry to uphold and maintain their cultural values wherever they may be found.
Mr Lawrence Tetteh was speaking on GBC’s Radio Upper West in Wa to formally launch “Heritage Month”, which was created by the Corporation in a bid to sensitise Ghanaians to patronise what is in their local environment for socio-cultural, political and economic advancement of the country.
Mr Tetteh said: “in a liberal sense, cultural heritage can be referred to the legacy of physical artifacts and intangible attributes of society that is inherited from past generations. Citing the 1992 constitution as a source to support the need to maintain the cultural values of the country, Mr Lawrence Tetteh quoted from article 39(2) to buttress the case of why appropriate Ghanaian customary and cultural values are adapted and developed as an integral parts of the growing needs of society as a whole saying that this move by the GBC is being done with the sole aim of sensitising the public starting with the staff of the Corporation for the appreciation of the Ghanaian cultural values.”
The heritage month is a month-long celebration with the call on all to trace back their roots and reestablish the indigenous ways of doing things with unique Ghanaian identity.
For the remembrance of the day which was launched on the February 27, 2020, most of the GBC staff in Wa station were clad in purely local costumes to match the occasion.
The launch was broadcast in English from the studios of Radio Upper West in Wa with translations in both the Dagaare/Wale and Sissala to the Station’s audience in the Upper West Region.
