Representative of the Gborbu Palace, Rev. Dr. D.N Gyasi-Ankrah, has clarified that the happened between the traditional Ga Priest and the 12-year-old girl is not betrothal but rather “Gborbu Ekpee Yoo”, a form of spiritual elevation.

Nuumo Borketey Laweh XXXIII, the 63-year-old Gborbu Wulomo, faced criticism when a video surfaced online showing him in a marriage ceremony with 12-year-old Naa Okromo.

The traditional ceremony, which garnered attention, occurred on Saturday, March 30, 2024, in Nungua.

Gborbu Wulomo defended his actions by stating that the girl would not be expected to fulfill marital duties.

In an exclusive interview with GTV at Gborbu Wulomo Palace today 2nd April, 2024, Rev. Dr. Gyasi-Ankrah stated that what transpired was not a typical engagement or wedding ceremony but rather a spiritual elevation.

He explained that this ritual was intended to elevate the young lady to a spiritual status, which only a virgin is qualified.

“ what has happened, in Ga word we call it Gborbu Ekpee Yoo and when we say that you sitting outside will think it’s Gborbu Wulomo that has married the woman”

“What occurred was not a human wedding but rather an elevation of the young lady to a leadership position among women,” he emphasized.

He also noted that the young lady does not reside with Gborbu, so the misunderstandings arise from the ignorance of people outside, particularly among the Ga people,” he remarked.

He underscored that it was the Gborbu deity that had “married” her.
“It is a source of pride for Nungua to have this very young, virgin girl treated properly to serve as an example for other young women in the town or society to emulate,” he concluded.
