The Ghana Blind Union, GBU is leading a campaign to form a National Advocacy committee to engage stakeholders to impress on government to ratify the African Disability Protocol.

The Protocol which is built on the rights enshrined in the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and UN Charter gives it an African relevance.

GBU with support from Sight Savers Ghana has therefore organised a training programme for stakeholders in the disability sector on the Protocol.

A Gender and Disability rights advocate and a committee member of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disability, Getrude Fefoame, took participants through the various articles in the African Disability Protocol.

She noted that the protocol is more specific to the needs of persons with disabilities in Africa, and has been simplified to highlights the human rights of Africans living with disability.

Executive Director of the Ghana Blind Union, Dr. Peter Obeng Asamoah, said government ratifying the African Disability Protocol will help tackle issues affecting Ghanaians living with disability.
