Ghana to leverage on Agriculture assets to overcome deficits in Sustainable Agri Sector

Farmers Day

A Researcher in Cultural Geography and Development, Dr Isabella Antunes says no African country based on the global food security index will attain SDG 2 by 2030. Ghana has in 23 years moved up the index from 29 in 2000 to 67 in 2022.

This trend runs among almost all the African countries, particularly sub-Sahara Africa.

Speaking on the topic, ‘Towards a Sustainable Agribusiness Sector in Ghana’ at the Ghana Industrial Summit and Exhibition in Accra, Dr Antunes said although Africa has a great agricultural advantage due to geography, its people are malnourished due to lack of use of agriculture assets such as favourable climate and workforce.

The Panel discussion which delved into opportunities and challenges for the agribusiness sector, had speakers from the agribusiness chamber, borderless alliance, Ghana, Food and Agriculture Organisation in Ghana, EU agribusiness platform, and the Netherlands Embassy.

They all identified finance as a major challenge facing the continent. There is therefore an urgent need for collaborations that will change the narrative.

More than 500 people, particularly women and the youth, are to benefit from 10 million EU and FAO funded agriculture and food security systems initiatives in the next three years.
