Ghana is set to host the 2024 Global Conference of Universal Access to Information from October 1 to October 2.
Ghana will be the first African member country selected by UNESCO to host the global celebration since its inception.
It is aimed at creating awareness about the need to expand information laws and their implementation.
It will also offer governments and civil societies a list of best practices for mainstreaming the Right to Information, RTI, into organizational systems.
The Minister of Information, Fatimatu Abubakar who launched Ghana’s hosting rights in Accra, said, the hosting is not only a recognition of Ghana’s effort towards access to information but rather a call to action to continue to advance the frontiers of transparency and accountability.
The country’s representative of UNESCO, Yakubu Abdul Hamid said public access to information helps build trust and fosters development as individuals are moved along with the government’s developmental agendas.
He noted that UNESCO will continue to provide the necessary support to the Ministry of Information to make the hosting a success.
The global conference will be concluded by adopting an Accra statement, which is harnessing the power of data for positive change, and a commitment to access to information.
