President John Mahama has reaffirmed the enduring friendship between Ghana and China at the Chinese Lantern Festival Gala, an event celebrating traditional Chinese culture and the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations.

Addressing a gathering of Ghanaian and Chinese dignitaries, business leaders, and cultural performers at the university of Ghana stadium in Accra, President Mahama underscored the importance of the festival, which marks the conclusion of the Chinese New Year celebrations.

He described it as a symbol of “unity, renewal, and hope,” drawing parallels between Chinese traditions and Ghanaian values of family and community.

“The Lantern Festival is more than just a celebration; it is a symbol of enlightenment, unity, and progress,” he said. “The act of lighting and releasing lanterns into the sky represents the collective aspirations for peace, prosperity, and a brighter future.”

He commended the contributions of the Chinese community in Ghana, highlighting their role in key sectors such as construction, manufacturing, agriculture, and trade. He also noted that many young Ghanaians had benefitted from educational opportunities in China, fostering a deeper cultural and economic exchange between the two nations.

“Ghana is open for business again,” Mr Mahama declared, inviting Chinese investors to explore new opportunities and create a “win-win situation” for both countries.

Reflecting on global challenges, including economic uncertainties, climate change, and geopolitical tensions, he called for greater international cooperation and resilience.

“As we move forward, we must continue to embrace mutual respect and ensure that the benefits of our partnership are shared by all,” he said.

The Lantern Festival Gala featured cultural performances by a troupe from China’s Fujian province, serving as a reminder of the deepening ties between the two nations.
