Ghana joined the global Commonwealth community in commemorating the 73rd Commonwealth Day with a flag-raising and tree-planting ceremony in Accra.

The event underscored the values of unity, cooperation, and sustainable development among member states, highlighting the need for collective action in addressing global challenges such as climate change, economic inequality, and social injustice.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Minister of Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to the ideals of the Commonwealth. He urged member states to remain adaptable in the face of geopolitical uncertainties, emphasising that collaboration is key to fostering a more equitable and inclusive future.

“As we raise our flags today, let it symbolise our commitment to peace, democracy, and prosperity. Together, we build. Together, we thrive,” Dr Boamah indicated.

The occasion was particularly significant for Ghana as it coincided with the 60th anniversary of the Commonwealth Secretariat, a vital institution facilitating cooperation among member states.

Dr. Omane Boamah highlighted the relevance of this year’s theme, “Together We Thrive,” describing it as a reflection of the Commonwealth’s mission to promote collaboration, inclusivity, and mutual support.

“This theme reminds us that our strength lies in unity and cooperation. As a global community, we face shared challenges, from climate change to economic inequality, and our collective action is key to addressing them,” Dr. Omane Boamah stated.

He also expressed Ghana’s pride in the appointment of former Foreign Affairs Minister Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey as the first African woman and first Ghanaian to serve as Commonwealth Secretary-General. He called on all member states to support her leadership as she steers the organisation towards a new era of progress and prosperity when she assumes office next month.

The Defence Minister expressed appreciation for the organisation’s role in supporting Ghana’s electoral processes and assured continued cooperation under President Mahama’s administration.

“As we reset our national agenda, we will prioritise sustainable development, climate action, and social progress, in alignment with the Commonwealth’s initiatives such as the Blue Charter and Climate Finance Access Hub,” Dr. Omane Boamah stated.

The British High Commissioner to Ghana, Harriet Thompson, speaking on behalf of the Head of the Commonwealth, His Majesty King Charles III, stressed that the most urgent task is to restore the disrupted harmony of the planet for the sake of future generations.

“The Commonwealth’s ability to unite people from all walks of life remains as important today as ever. I can only hope that the Commonwealth will continue its vital work to restore that harmony,” the statement said.

In a speech read by Head of Mission, Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council (CWEIC), John Obeng Apea, on behalf of the Commonwealth Secretary-General, Patricia Scotland, she highlighted the enduring strength of the Commonwealth, describing it as a “living testament to the power of connection, friendship, and shared purpose.”

“Our family of nations is unique, not only in its vast reach across continents and oceans but also in the deep relationships it nurtures,” she said.

Reflecting on her nine-year tenure, Baroness Scotland emphasised efforts to modernise and reform the Commonwealth to better serve its 2.7 billion people. She commended the spirit of collaboration among member states, particularly in supporting one another through crises and fostering innovation led by young people.

“As I prepare to leave office, I do so with great satisfaction, knowing that the Commonwealth has the capacity and confidence not only to face the future but to build it,” she remarked.

Expressing gratitude to the Commonwealth Heads of Government for entrusting her with the role, she pledged her continued support for the organisation and her successor.

“I will stand with you all and behind my successor as you continue to stand together, strive together, and thrive together,” she said.

The celebration reaffirmed Ghana’s active role in global diplomacy and its dedication to strengthening partnerships within the Commonwealth for mutual growth and development.
