Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, paid a working visit to the Republic of Cyprus on Wednesday, 26th June, 2024. Ghana and Cyprus have enjoyed cordial relations since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1989. The visit presented an opportunity to further deepen cooperation between the two countries.
During the visit, the Foreign Affairs Minister held separate meetings with the President of the Republic of Cyprus, His Excellency Nikos Christodoulides, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cyprus, Dr. Constantinos Kombos. Madam Ayorkor Botchwey highlighted the opportunities that exist for both countries to deepen cooperation through trade and investment during the meetings.
Recognising the potential for cooperation at both the bilateral and multilateral levels, Madam Ayorkor Botchwey and her hosts also discussed ways to engage at the multilateral level, especially the Commonwealth, to further strengthen the organisation to deal with global challenges.
The Minister also used the opportunity to inform of her candidature for the post of Secretary-General of the Commonwealth. She highlighted her agenda for transforming the Commonwealth Secretariat, to ensure that it would provide the requisite support for a development cooperation model for resilience-building for vulnerable members of the Commonwealth.
