Ghana condemns Hamas over attacks on Israel

Ghana's Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey.

Ghana has condemned Hamas militants from the Gaza Strip over recent attacks in southern Israel resulting in several deaths and injuries.

Saturday’s shock attacks by Hamas led to the deadliest day in decades for Israel and come after months of surging violence between Palestinians and Israelis with the decades-long conflict now heading into uncharted and dangerous new territory.

“Ghana unequivocally condemns the attacks and calls on the Hamas leadership to immediately cease the attacks and withdraw its militants from southern Israel,” a statement issued by the Foreign Affairs Ministry on Sunday said.

The statement issued on 8 October added: “While Ghana affirms its support for Israel’s right to exist and defend itself, it calls on the Israeli government to exercise restraint in its response to Hamas’ attacks.”

The statement further called on the two sides to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict to return to the “negotiation table”.
