The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), has addressed public concerns over the service’s response time to fire incidents, defending its performance and highlighting significant improvements in operations.

The service says it has reduced its average response time over the years.

“In 2012, a survey by the Ghana Statistical Agency indicated our average response time was 12 minutes. Today, we are responding in an average of seven minutes,” he said.

Divisional Officer Two (DO II), Desmond Ackah of the GNFS, disclosed this in an interview with Thelma Tackie on GTV’s breakfast show.

He cited several recent incidents to support his claims.

“At the Techiman and Kantamanto Market fire, our team arrived within one and two minutes, respectively, because the station was nearby. Similarly, we reached the Tamale Timber Market fire in seven minutes and the Kasoa Market fire last October in just six minutes.”

Mr. Ackah acknowledged operational challenges, including the limited number of fire stations and equipment. He explained that in areas far from GNFS stations, response times might exceed 10 minutes due to the longer travel distance.

“Yes, we face challenges with our trucks and coverage, but this doesn’t mean we are not doing our best,” he stated.

The DO II called on Ghanaians to view the fire service as an ally and advocate for increased resources. He highlighted recent government investments in infrastructure, including three training schools and the Fire Service College at Kyeibi. However, he stressed the need for more specialised equipment, such as hydraulic platforms and extendable ladders, to respond effectively to fires in high-rise buildings in cities like Tamale, Takoradi, Kumasi, and Tema.

Mr. Ackah concluded by assuring the public of the GNFS’s commitment to improving service delivery while urging continued support and collaboration from all stakeholders.
