The Ghana Navy has successfully warded off pirates on board 2 speed boats who suspiciously approached a Tuna vessel, AFKO 805, operating 105 nautical miles south of Aflao.
In a statement, Acting Public Relations Director of the Navy, Commander Andy La-Anyane said the operation ended without any casualty to the vessel and its crew.
He said the vessel continues to be engaged in its lawful fishing activities.
Piracy and armed robbery in the Gulf of Guinea have become a notorious criminal activity and have been of increasing concern to the maritime sector.
To this end, the Ghana Navy in recent times has doubled its patrols at sea to curb the numerous piracy attacks in the Gulf of Guinea making Ghana’s Exclusive Economic Zone one of the safest in the Region.
Commander La-Anyane said the Chief of the Naval Staff recently visited his counterparts in Nigeria, Benin and Togo to seek their cooperation to combat the regional menace.
Additionally, the Ghana Navy in its quest to curb the menace deployed armed naval personnel on board fishing vessels in consultation with stakeholders in the industry to ensure a safe and secured maritime environment for the smooth operations of fishing and commercial vessels.
He assured all vessels and their operators within Ghana’s maritime domain of the Navy’s eagerness to protect all those engaged in legal businesses and also accost all those engaged in illegalities.
