Ghana Police: Government to bridge gap to meet UN Global ratio of 1: 500

The government says it remains committed to bridging the staff strength gap in the Police Service, to ensure the country meets the UN Global ratio of 1: 500.

Currently the police civilian population in Ghana is 1 policeman to 768, a shortfall in the UN Ratio which must be addressed.

This came up at the Annual National Police Command Conference at Royal Senchi Hotel in Akosombo in the Eastern Region.

Personnel numbers in the Ghana Police Service are inadequate to effectively serve the rapidly growing population.

The Police says, this brings to the fore security implications.

As at the last population count, Ghana’s population was 30 million and this is against the police staff capacity of about 40,000. This reality, has left the police overwhelmed.

The Inspector-General of Police, Mr. James Oppong-Boanuah, says to improve on policing, the service has instituted measures such as Community policing.

Mr. James Oppong-Boanuah said despite the current relative peace and security, crimes including terrorism, robbery, manslaughter, arson, rape, kidnapping, assault and domestic violence continue to threaten communities.

The Minster for the Interior Mr. Ambrose Dery said the theme for the 2021 National Police Command Conference ” The Role of Leadership in preventing violent crimes and promoting community safety”, ties in with President Akufo Addo’s security goals of safety.

The National Police Command Conference NAPOCC, is a meeting of senior members of the Police Service to examine their activities and plan the way forward.

This year’s conference which is focusing on security issues in each police region, will end on Saturday May 22, 2021.
