Dr. Fidelia Dake, a Senior Lecturer at the Regional Institute for Population Studies (RIPS), at the University of Ghana, has stressed the integral role of population in all societal aspects. She drew attention to the challenges with Ghana’s population dynamics, which include the trend of skilled youth migrating from Ghana in search of better opportunities.

She highlighted troubling statistics showing that a significant portion of Ghanaian youth are unemployed, uneducated, or lack skills, posing a serious challenge to national development.

Speaking on Uniiq Breakfast Drive, she said the population is beyond numbers.

”It includes location, quality, housing conditions, and access to basic necessities, not just the sheer number of people.”

She noted that while numerical data is crucial, a comprehensive understanding of population dynamics is essential.

“Population is beyond numbers,” Dr. Dake remarked, highlighting that it includes location, quality, housing conditions, and access to basic necessities, not just the sheer number of people. She noted that while numerical data is crucial, a comprehensive understanding of population dynamics is essential.

Drawing the links between population dynamics and national development, she said the negative dynamics could hinder the achievements expected.

The theme for the 2024 celebration of World Population Day is “Leave No One Behind, Count Everyone,” hence emphasising the importance of population awareness and its significant impact on the development and sustainability of every nation.

July 11 is observed globally as World Population Day. This year also commemorates the 30th anniversary of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) Programme of Action.
