The World Economics Governance Index 2023 report has placed Ghana among the best ten governed African countries, placing fifth above Senegal, Malawi, Lesotho, Burkina Faso, Togo and Nigeria.
Ghana celebrating over three decades of democracy under the fourth republic has been described by many as the beacon of Democracy in the Sub-Saharan region.
Even though it has been plagued by several shortcomings in recent years affecting her ratings on the global reports, the World Economics Governance Index showcased that, there’s quite a significant improvement in the administration of the country.
In the report, Ghana sits fifth behind Mauritius, Namibia, South Africa and Botswana respectively. According to the report, gradings were done based on the indexes of Rule of Law, Press Freedom, Political Rights and Corruption. This leaves Ghana also as the best-governed West African country.
With Ghana scoring 88.4% in political rights, it recorded a significant lower index in the corruption category, rule of law and press freedom respectively. It is also remarkable that none of the top ten best-governed African countries reached the ‘A’ grade because they didn’t equate the needed percentage to get to that degree.
The report calls for a robust improvement in the way the administration of rule of law in the country is being done, a more improved approach to the fight against corruption which has become an “evil paint” on every successive government and most importantly the need for Journalists and Media Practitioners to be accorded the free environment to work without fear or intimidations.
