Like most of Africa, many regions of Ghana have very rigid definitions of traditional gender roles and masculinity. Men’s appearance and dress have typically been restricted to simpler, solid-colored kaftans, shirts and trousers, as well as more utilitarian looks typical of the regional adinkra fabric designs.

But some Ghanaian males have been experimenting with pushing the envelope in terms of self-expression through unconventional fashion choices in recent years.

The rise of a fashion-forward youth subculture in major cities like Accra and Kumasi has contributed to the popularisation of more experimental designs and aesthetics that are typically associated with femininity.

Formerly worn by Ghanaian women, very tight and crop tops are now occasionally seen on self-assured guys who aren’t scared to defy social norms. This newfound openness to experimenting with views of gender identity through clothing signals an exciting development in the nation’s fashion traditions.

In Ghana, foreign-made thrift stores have been leading the charge in supporting gender-neutral fashion. The introduction of these fashion trends permits younger Ghanaians to construe cultural symbols in creative and innovative ways.

Additionally, tourism has increased Ghanaians’ exposure to outside influences, broadening the range of acceptable fashions. Being able to adapt Western design elements like ruffles, designs, and makeup with ease is especially important for LGBTQ people, as it allows them to freely express identities that are strictly regulated in Ghanaian society.

Social media allows users to connect with like-minded trendsetters to create online communities where non-conforming people can show themselves without fear of discrimination. Here, identities are acted out of joy and solidarity rather than stigma, and beauty is being redefined. Popular Ghanaian Osebo takes this trend really seriously and styles accordingly.
