As an agrarian economy, Ghana should be capable of producing enough vegetables such as tomatoes, onions and staples. However, a lot of Ghanaian farmers are shying away from the production of these vegetables,  resulting in huge imports from Burkina-Faso and Mali.

Speaking to Radio Ghana’s George Ankrah on what accounts for this, seed Scientist and a farmer Prof. Roger Kanton said Ghana has all it takes to provide quality and high yielding seeds to farmers to provide the tomato and onion needs even for export.

President of the Agriculture Chamber of Commerce  Philip Abayori, said achieving results requires that industry players team up to process the excess foods.

He noted that Ghana is spending too much on tomato imports and said it is time the good policy of one district, one factory is made to work to reverse the trend.
