The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration and the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) and the Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF) have held a five-day training programme on Climate Change Diplomacy and Negotiations in Accra.
The training programme brought together 55 participants from Ghana, Colombia, Ethiopia, Kyrgyzstan, Brazil, Chad, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
During the programme, the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Madam Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, reiterated Ghana’s commitment to capacity building and diplomacy training, not only for its citizens but for other nationals from climate-vulnerable countries who are all valuable contributors to climate action and agents of change in their respective countries.
Hon. Ayorkor Botchwey was hopeful that the programme would equip participants with the requisite skills to promote and drive ambitious climate actions as well as mobilise the needed international support for climate-threatened nations.
The programme discussed the world’s present competing interests, political tensions, and problems, such as the economic recession, and development priorities and strategies to resolve them in the best interests of developing countries. Participants also examined the outcomes of COP 21 and COP 22, as well as preparations for COP 28.
Ghana is the current chair of the Climate Vulnerable Forum, and this is the first CVF-UNITAR Capacity-Building Training Programme in Climate Diplomacy to be held in Ghana.
