Management of Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has cautioned the public as well as institutions or organisations which have properties downstream the Weija Dam that the opening of the spill gates may cause flooding.
GWCL says it will begin spilling excess water from the Weija Dam as part of routine measures to safeguard it.
This is as a result of the recent onset of the rains which have increased the water level close to the safe operating level of 47feet. This is to ensure that its safe operating levels are maintained to prevent it from possible collapse.
GWCL therefore urges people living in communities downstream and along the buffer zone close to the river course to evacuate the area to forestall any eventualities to protect life and property.
GWCL has also begun a house to house sensitisation as well as using public address systems to inform people within the communities. The company is also liaising with National Security to dredge the estuary to enable easy flow into the sea.
Communities that are likely to be affected are Tetegu, Oblogo, Pambros Salt, Lower McCarthy Hill, Lower Weija, Bojo Beach, Ada Kope, Tsokome and surrounding communities.
