The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Kingsford Sumani Bagbin, has emphasized the importance of collective responsibility in maintaining peace and stability as well as upholding Ghana’s democratic credentials.
Speaking at the seminal lecture at the University for Development Studies (UDS) in Tamale, Bagbin acknowledged progress in Ghana’s democratic journey, but also pointed out challenges that have arisen recent times.
Mr. Bagbin’s remarks come against growing concerns about electoral integrity and public trust in governance as Ghana prepares for Presidential and Parliamentary elections scheduled for December 7 this year.
He called upon stakeholders, including political leaders, civil society organizations, and ordinarycitizens, to play active roles in promoting democratic values and ensure that the upcoming elections are free, fair, and transparent.
During the lecture, the Speaker also highlighted various initiatives being undertaken by Parliament to enhance democratic practices and engage more effectively with constituents.
He urged participants to participate effectively in civic education programs aimed at raising awareness about the electoral process seriously.
The event at UDS, brought together academics, political leaders, and students. As Ghana approaches another election cycle Mr. Bagbin’s call serves as a clarion reminder for unity and vigilance in preserving the hard-won democratic gains of the nation.
Other Speaker billed to address the forum include Kofi Bentil of Imani Ghana and Professor Emmanuel Kwesi Aning of the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre.
